Traditional Stop Stuttering Therapy

When I was younger I was often mystified by the lack of help that was available to people like me – people who have a stutter. And what about the treatments that were available? Was it of value? Was it a positive thinking form of therapy? Did the therapy enable me to stop stuttering? These are the questions that I will be answering within this article – I hope you find it interesting and of benefit.

At the outset I would like to share with you some positive news – I no longer have a stutter, in fact I have now enjoyed life as a fluent person for the last sixteen wonderful years.

And now for the negatives – which are all to do with the help that I received as a child, as a teenager and as a young adult from the traditional speech and language specialists. Yes I am fully aware of the fact that these people are “qualified”. But what does that mean? Fat diddly squat!

So the first question again – was the therapy of value? Well I started to stutter at the age of four and I continued to stutter up to the age of twenty-two therefore no it was not of any value. But you did eventually manage to eradicate it from your speech? Yes but this was after I had given up on the speech therapists and decided to attempt to find my own stuttering solution.

Second question – Did the speech therapy enable me to stop stuttering? NO

Third question – Was it a positive thinking form of therapy? NO

The therapy was in fact shockingly bad and yes I am rather bitter, there was absolutely no reason why I needed to continue to stutter for these eighteen years – positive and educated therapy from people that have previously had this form of speech impediment is what I required but unfortunately this was not available at the time.

The Causes And Reasons Why Some People Start Stuttering

I had a speech impediment, known as a stutter for eighteen years, it started to ruin my life from the age of four. After successfully overcoming the stutter at the age of twenty-two, I now as a career help other people to achieve fluency by running stuttering help courses here in the UK. As you can imagine, I have therefore met and helped many people who stutter, and always ask them, how and why in their opinion their stutter started.

There are those who have absolutely no idea as to why the stutter developed but these are some of the reasons that other people told me:

It was triggered after a traumatic event

It runs in the family

They copied a friend at school who had a stuttering problem and then it stuck with them

An over aggressive relative

Because they were left handed!

A couple of years ago, I had a female client who told me about how she had developed a stutter. She had developed this form of speech impediment when she was a young adult. She then fell pregnant for the first time, and was very excited about the prospect of becoming a mum.

Like no doubt the majority of first time mothers she had quite a few reservations about the birth and her mates did not exactly help by telling her just how much the whole experience hurts – they were doing this to wind her up of course. At the end of the day she was fully aware that this was just the way in which her friends were and therefore took their comments with a pinch of salt.

The day of the birth arrived and unfortunately the delivery was particulary difficult and very painful. This really shocked and traumatised her, she had never imagined that it could have been that bad. After the birth of the baby, who was a healthy boy, she developed a stutter.

Not all people who stutter have it from an early age, another one of my clients was fluent until the age of nineteen. At this age he was being bullied at work where he was a DVD authoring superviser and this was the trigger for him to start stuttering. I am happy to report that he has now also managed to achieve fluency.

Information About Speech Therapy Courses

I am thirty-six years of age and live in Birmingham, England. From the age of four I unfortunately had a speech impediment known as stuttering. This impediment basically ruined my life for eighteen years before I finally managed to overcome the stutter. This article is all about stuttering or as some people call it stammering.

Stammering or stuttering can have a dramatic effect on somebodys confidence and it certainly seemed to my crush mine. It made me accept second best in life and stopped me living my life as I wanted to.

I have no doubt that it must be extremely hard for a fluent person to be able to realise just how difficult life can be for someone that has a stammer/stutter.

I now run one to one speech courses which are held in Birmingham. A couple of years ago one of my clients told me about a situation he had been involved in. He had an afternoon out with his friends in a local pub on a Sunday a few months back. After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he could not speak all of the words fluently and the barman accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He tried to explain that he was not drunk but had a stutter, however the barman relpied, that’s what they all say.

He returned to his friends who asked him where his drink was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarressing.

Whether you are work selling external doors or if you offer cheap calls; effective communication is essential to all of us. Unfortunately for some, like myself in the past, stuttering can have a dramatic impact on our lives.

Steve runs The How to Stop Stuttering Centre in the UK where he offers a one-to-one intensive therapy course helping people to achieve fluency.

According to latest figures, around one percent of people in the UK have a stutter. Most of these people will have seeked help at some stage of their life, and will have looked into stuttering treatments and the different forms of stuttering therapy. This is what they may have found:

Traditional speech therapy

Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!

The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:

speak slowly

take a deep breath before you speak

accept your stutter

I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.

Group stuttering speech courses

There are now a number of private speech courses that offer stuttering/stammering help and are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.

One to one speech courses

There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.

Stuttering self help dvd and ebook

For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available. Whichever form of stuttering treatment you choose it is essential that you work hard to practice the techniques.

In general the more practice the better. If you are looking for available stuttering therapy courses and self-help treatments then The How To Stop Stammering Centre which is based in the UK could be exactly what you are looking for.
