I am a person who used to approach life in totally the wrong way – in fact I often look back and laugh at just how pathetic I used to be. I was a very negative person, I would stress about seemingly everything and believed that I was so unfortunate compared to other people.
I used to forever compare my life to that of my close friends and family. These people seemed to really enjoy life and did not seem to have a care in the world. I, on the other hand had many issues to deal, with which made life one big struggle. I was unable to talk fluently due to a stuttering problem, this stutter caused me many traumas and made me into a very quiet and shy person. In my early twenties, I decided that I had had enough of being miserable and depressed and started to fight back.
I started to read and find out about how people lived in different parts of the world. By tuning into the latest news on a daily basis would help me to stay in touch with what was happening around the world. Some of the stories and the way in which people live came not so much as a shock, but as a wake up call to me. I would not want to swap my life with theirs, that is for sure.
The problems that I had or thought I had, were now so small compared to what other people have to cope with, and it actually made me feel quite grateful. I have a great job working for a mig welding supplies company where I work in the accounts department. I do have a weight problem, this is something of my own doing and something which I can change, if I am determined enough. Even though I stammer, I can still converse, I may even be able to cure the stammer, which I now have. I was now in a much better frame of mind to be able to deal with some of my bigger worries.
I also needed to gain more sleep and with this in mind I purchased a quality silk pillowcase. The more sleep that I could obtain the less stressed and depressed I was likely to be in the morning.
The Causes And Reasons Why Some People Start Stuttering

I had a speech impediment, known as a stutter for eighteen years, it started to ruin my life from the age of four. After successfully overcoming the stutter at the age of twenty-two, I now as a career help other people to achieve fluency by running stuttering help courses here in the UK. As you can imagine, I have therefore met and helped many people who stutter, and always ask them, how and why in their opinion their stutter started.
There are those who have absolutely no idea as to why the stutter developed but these are some of the reasons that other people told me:
It was triggered after a traumatic event
It runs in the family
They copied a friend at school who had a stuttering problem and then it stuck with them
An over aggressive relative
Because they were left handed!
A couple of years ago, I had a female client who told me about how she had developed a stutter. She had developed this form of speech impediment when she was a young adult. She then fell pregnant for the first time, and was very excited about the prospect of becoming a mum.
Like no doubt the majority of first time mothers she had quite a few reservations about the birth and her mates did not exactly help by telling her just how much the whole experience hurts – they were doing this to wind her up of course. At the end of the day she was fully aware that this was just the way in which her friends were and therefore took their comments with a pinch of salt.
The day of the birth arrived and unfortunately the delivery was particulary difficult and very painful. This really shocked and traumatised her, she had never imagined that it could have been that bad. After the birth of the baby, who was a healthy boy, she developed a stutter.
Not all people who stutter have it from an early age, another one of my clients was fluent until the age of nineteen. At this age he was being bullied at work where he was a DVD authoring superviser and this was the trigger for him to start stuttering. I am happy to report that he has now also managed to achieve fluency.

According to latest figures, around one percent of people in the UK have a stutter. Most of these people will have seeked help at some stage of their life, and will have looked into stuttering treatments and the different forms of stuttering therapy. This is what they may have found:
Traditional speech therapy
Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!
The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:
speak slowly
take a deep breath before you speak
accept your stutter
I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.
Group stuttering speech courses
There are now a number of private speech courses that offer stuttering/stammering help and are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.
One to one speech courses
There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.
Stuttering self help dvd and ebook
For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available. Whichever form of stuttering treatment you choose it is essential that you work hard to practice the techniques.
In general the more practice the better. If you are looking for available stuttering therapy courses and self-help treatments then The How To Stop Stammering Centre which is based in the UK could be exactly what you are looking for.

Have you heard about the latest therapy for stammering? Now this is not your usual treatment via your local speech and language therapist, this is what is known as “specialist stammering treatment”. Why? The reason for this is because the speech coach is a person that has previously had a stammer.
Steve Hill, aged 35 and from Birmingham, UK, developed a stammer when he was just four years of age. Despite attending the many different forms of speech and language therapy classes for many years the stammer continued to plague his life until he was aged twenty-two.
Mr Hill had a single life-time goal or ambition which was to some how achieve fluency. Despite being advised to accept the speech impediment that was ruining his life, Steve continued in his quest to find the “solution to stammering”.
He was informed on numerous occasions that there is not a cure for stammering however Steve just would not accept second best in life. He truly believes that there is only one way that a person should think, positively.
Steve eventually managed to overcome his stammer at the age of 22 after formulating his own fluency techniques.
He now teaches these techniques to other people who stutter and does this via a one-to-one speech course. There are also a number of self-help stop stammering therapy options available for those people who are unable to attend a course; these include an audio-book, an e-book and a DVD.
Stuttering is clearly a problem that affects many people of all ages around the world. There are many ways to approach such a issue and it is always a good idea to do as much research as possible.
There is full back up provided where people are able to telephone Steve to ask him any questions that arise.
Steve:
“In the past I often dreamt about what life would be like as a fluent person. Now that I am able to speak free from the fear of stuttering I have to say that it feels even better than what I had imagined to be. I am now able to reach my full potentail in life”.
