Can You Overcome a Stammer?

Lots and lots of people have managed to overcome a stammer. For this reason it often astounds me when I hear people, especially speech therapists, state that there is no known cure for stammering. So why are they being so negative? Just because they do not have the skills to help people to stop stammering does not mean that they should be killing what little confidence that we have left.

How many people have managed to overcome a stammer? As stated in the opening paragraph of this article there has been a large number of people who have managed to overcome a stammer, these include many famous people. Searching on one of the major search engines for a phrase such as “famous stammerers” should help you to locate a number of these.

How easy is it to overcome a stammer? It certainly is not easy to overcome a stammer, it takes a lot of practice to enable the techniques that are taught to become a natural part of one’s speech. Even though it does require this amount of practice and dedication the majority of people who stammer are more than willing to put in this amount effort. It goes without saying that to eradicate a stammer from one’s life can literally change a person’s life.

How long does it take to achieve fluency? Each and every one of us are individuals however on average it takes around three months to achieve fluency.

Are there any therapies for stammering out there that actually work? There are self-help stammering therapy products which include DVD’s, e-books and audio books. There are also one-to-one speech courses which are run by people who have previously had a stammer.

Where can I find out about the types of stuttering help and stammering therapies that are available? Probably the easiest way is to do a search on Google for “stammering therapy courses”.

Information About Speech Therapy Courses

I am thirty-six years of age and live in Birmingham, England. From the age of four I unfortunately had a speech impediment known as stuttering. This impediment basically ruined my life for eighteen years before I finally managed to overcome the stutter. This article is all about stuttering or as some people call it stammering.

Stammering or stuttering can have a dramatic effect on somebodys confidence and it certainly seemed to my crush mine. It made me accept second best in life and stopped me living my life as I wanted to.

I have no doubt that it must be extremely hard for a fluent person to be able to realise just how difficult life can be for someone that has a stammer/stutter.

I now run one to one speech courses which are held in Birmingham. A couple of years ago one of my clients told me about a situation he had been involved in. He had an afternoon out with his friends in a local pub on a Sunday a few months back. After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he could not speak all of the words fluently and the barman accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He tried to explain that he was not drunk but had a stutter, however the barman relpied, that’s what they all say.

He returned to his friends who asked him where his drink was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarressing.

Whether you are work selling external doors or if you offer cheap calls; effective communication is essential to all of us. Unfortunately for some, like myself in the past, stuttering can have a dramatic impact on our lives.

Steve runs The How to Stop Stuttering Centre in the UK where he offers a one-to-one intensive therapy course helping people to achieve fluency.

According to latest figures, around one percent of people in the UK have a stutter. Most of these people will have seeked help at some stage of their life, and will have looked into stuttering treatments and the different forms of stuttering therapy. This is what they may have found:

Traditional speech therapy

Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!

The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:

speak slowly

take a deep breath before you speak

accept your stutter

I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.

Group stuttering speech courses

There are now a number of private speech courses that offer stuttering/stammering help and are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.

One to one speech courses

There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.

Stuttering self help dvd and ebook

For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available. Whichever form of stuttering treatment you choose it is essential that you work hard to practice the techniques.

In general the more practice the better. If you are looking for available stuttering therapy courses and self-help treatments then The How To Stop Stammering Centre which is based in the UK could be exactly what you are looking for.

Speech Therapy For Stammering

Are you somebody who has a stammer? My name is Stephen Hill and I had a stammer problem which started when I was aged four. I had to endure a frustrating 18 years having the stammer before finally managing to achieve total fluency. This article is about the types of speech therapy that are available for stammering.

After my stammer developed, my parents decided that I needed to attend some sort of speech therapy. So what forms of therapy did you attend Steve? All sorts – every sort! Some of therapy were on a group basis and others on a 1-to-1 basis. I was given lots of different advice about how to stop stammering. These are some of them:

slowing down the speed of my speech

costal breathing

prolonging each word or sound

taking a deep breath before I started speaking

I had started in the class which is sometimes referred to as preschool stammering. I was very young to attend stammering speech therapy and my parents were reassured that most people who stammer in childhood soon grow out of it. I guess there is no rhyme and reason to it but I did not manage to just “stop stammering” and it continued to affect my life well into adulthood.

I grew older and then joined the class known as childhood stammering. I continued to attend speech therapy and joining in with their speech therapy activities and their speech therapy games. This had little effect on my fluency and it has to be stated, that I really did not want to attend these anti stammering sessions. So why was? It was mainly due to the fact that I knew that these therapists had not had a stammer and that for this reason they could not truly understand what I was going through.

I then progressed to the class called, adult stammering. I now decided that speech therapy was not really working for me and seeked alternative stammering treatment.

I decided to try my own form of stammering help. Even though I had a stammer, at times I could talk very well. As an example when I was drunk, I spoke superbly. This was possibly because of the additional confidence the alcohol seemed to give me.

After nearly a year I managed to overcome stammering and eradicate the stammer once and for all. As a career I now help other people to stop stammering.
